Government of Paraguay Proposes 10-Year Jail Terms for Illegal Bitcoin Miners
Government of Paraguay Proposes Jail Time for Illegal Bitcoin Miners
The government of Paraguay is taking a strong stance against illegal Bitcoin miners by proposing a bill that could see them facing up to 10 years in jail. The bill, sent to parliament as a matter of urgency, aims to punish illegal miners with lengthy prison sentences and allow for the seizure of mining equipment.
Protecting National Electricity Administration
The bill is designed to protect the state-owned National Electricity Administration (ANDE) from the theft of large amounts of energy by illegal Bitcoin mining operators. The proposed legislation would give courts the power to impose a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail for the crime of energy theft and allow ANDE to seize and sell off mining rigs, with the proceeds benefiting the state-run agency.
Crackdown on Illegal Bitcoin Mining
Bitcoin mining has seen a boom in Paraguay, where miners have taken advantage of the country’s surplus hydroelectric power. However, many miners have resorted to illegal connections to grids, causing issues for power suppliers. Police have responded by seizing thousands of mining rigs and conducting raids on illegal mining farms.
With the government’s bill backed by key stakeholders, including the Public Ministry and the judiciary, it is clear that illegal BTC mining is a serious issue in Paraguay. To stay updated on the latest crypto news and updates, subscribe to the Amen Crypto newsletter.
